We see the toll that magic and trance can exact on humans. Although Heather never believed the legends about the restoration of Ormaria, after three shape-shifting Ormarian wizards awaken from a long magical slumber, she joins their perilous quest to regain the throne. Witches, a class of outcast criminals who practiced black magic, were said to have the ability to shapeshift into any animal they chose. Shapeshifting plays a role in the story. Syanthe has grown up imprisoned in a forest, where all her shapeshifting kind have been trapped by the king and the powerful, magic wielding, priesthood that serves him. We learn about the virtues of bravery and loyalty. There is even some genderbending. Used judiciously and with training, however, these baleful herbs can help out with advanced magical work. But for Syanthe, the imprisonment is illusory. Metaphor, perhaps, is the tame, the civilised, version of shamanic shapeshifting, word-magic, the recognition of stories as toothed messengers from the wilds.
